January Favorites!

WOW WOW WOW, January favorites already?! I can’t believe this month is pretty much over, but I feel like I start 98% of my favorites posts saying that. Anyway, let’s see what I loved this month.

BEAUTY

I talked about the original Tartelette palette in my 2015 favorites and already knew this one was going to make it into this month’s faves pretty early on. It’s got the most perfect warm neutral colors but you can still create a couple of different looks with it. If you’re thinking about picking this baby up, stay tuned, I’ll have a review up soon!

This sample of Glamglow came in one of my Sephora Favorites bags I picked up in November. I didn’t use it until this month and I can already tell you I’m going to be picking up some more of their masks. I’ve heard nothing but good things about all of their different ones but they are stupid expensive. I haven’t wanted to make the leap but I’m pretty sure this sample has convinced me.

I must have a thing for not really liking mascara when I first open them but liking them more as I use them. I don’t know if it just takes a bit for me to get used to the wand and formula or if the world is right and most things get better with time. Either way, I found myself using it all month long.

I can’t tell if this Smashbox primer water is actually doing something for my skin or if it’s just water but either way I’ve used it every day before applying my makeup and it’s pretty much empty. I feel like it helps even my skin out and make my makeup go on a little more smoothly. Maybe I’ll wait a week when I run out and see if I notice a huge difference before repurchasing.

MEDIA

I binged the entire season (as I’m sure 99% of the world did) of Making a Murder this month. AKA how I spend my New Years day. I was obsessed with serial so I knew this was right up my alley. I don’t have much to say because there’s so much controversy surrounding it; but if you want to know my thoughts, read this article ( goo.gl/ZQ62Rr ) because I pretty much agree with the whole thing!

I needed a change of pace after spending 10 hours with Steve Avery so I’ve been rewatching Gossip Girl and I forgot how much I loved it. I mean… Dan Humphrey, I can’t be the only one that absolutely loves him, can I? It’s an easy show to have on because I’ve seen it a million times and don’t have to give it my full attention. Although, I totally do and end up procrastinating or staying up way too late because “one more episode.”

I got these SONY speakers for Christmas and praise hands emoji. You know when you get something you didn't even know you needed and you wonder how you lived life without it? That’s what this was for me. My mac pretty much whispers when I’m trying to play music so this speaker is so handy. Now I constantly have jamzzz playing and I’m loving it.

Since I’ve been non stop listening to music- it’s only fitting I have a new favorite song. I actually love all of Rainy Days + Sleepless Nights by Adam Agin but my favorite has to be Bookends. It’s such a pretty song but also, ALL THE FEELS.

RANDOM

I celebrated my birthday last weekend at Universal and it definitely made it into my favorites. Apparently I can only be friends with people named Jessica who also have birthdays within a month of mine. Of course we all got birthday pins, consumed a little too much fireball and continued to insist on going on rides after the park was closed because “it’s my birthday” and “Helen sent me” are valid excuses. Last week I recapped 25 things 25 taught me and I’m already learning some valuable lessons for 26.

For the past few years I’ve been really into statement necklaces. I think that you can pair them with a simple tee or dress and really have them make well.. a statement. I’ve got more than I know what to do with but this past month, I’ve changed it up. LOFT had this gorgeous double bar necklace that I knew I needed to try out. I’ve had my eye on a simple bar for a while but didn’t want to commit to spending lot because I wasn’t sure if I was going to like the simplicity but so happy I picked this up!

That's it- that's all I got for you today. What were some of your favorite things in January?

25 things 25 taught me

So here I am- my last day of being 25. I’m about to enter what I’m calling my EARLY late 20s. Actually, I’m being dramatic. I’m really not someone who’s ever cared about getting older. ….But talk to me the night before my 30th birthday I might have a different outlook. Last year, I recapped things 2014 taught me but this year I wanted to switch it up a bit.

25 was a pretty okay year when I look back. Nothing monumental happened (except moving but that was with like 2 months left so we’re not counting it). I mean, it definitely wasn’t a bad year,by any means, but nothing super great happened either. It wasn’t a year of any major change or life event, it was a pretty average 365 days.

So, today I’m sharing with you 25 things I learned at 25.

Some people will do bare minimum to get by- don’t be one of them.
Eventually karma will catch up with them. Challenge yourself, you will feel more productive.

Stop at the gas station at night. You are definitely not going to have enough time to stop in the morning.

Fireball is always a good idea.

Delete his number.
It doesn’t make you petty, it makes you smart. And keeps you from feeling like an idiot.

Don’t worry, hair grows.

Make your bed.
Coming home to a clean space will help you feel more calm.

Just try it. If you don’t like it- don’t do it again.

Buy yourself flowers.

Surround yourself with the right people. It will make you be a better version of yourself.

Change can be good.
It might be hard and it definitely takes a while to get used to. Embrace it.

In-n-Out is not worth the hype.
…very confused about why people think it is.

Don’t buy color. You will gravitate towards neutrals 99% of the time.

Friendship is a two way street.
Keep in touch with people who you want in your life. Don’t feel bad if not all of them make the cut.

Being an adult can be scary. It can also be rewarding.

Cats are weird.

Manitowoc County is filled with some really sketchy people.

Don’t feel guilty if you spend your day off in bed, but don’t spend every day off like that.

It’s okay to have a crush like a 14 year old girl.
And it’s okay if nothing comes of it. It was fun while it lasted.

Invest in good skincare.
You spend too much money on makeup to ignore your skin. Also- water is the best skincare. And it’s free. You’re welcome.

Adele can do no wrong.
Neither can James Bay. Neither can Florence + The Machine. Way to go with your music choices this year.

Get rid of what you don’t need- it will actually feel like you have more.
When you love everything in your closet, it’s easier to get dressed. Everything else is clutter.

Complain if you need to, but don’t let it consume you.
Move on.

Start a savings account. Your future self will thank you.
Even if it’s just a couple dollars a month, it all adds up.

Fireball is never a good idea.
…or is it?

Make fun of yourself. Find someone else who also enjoys this.
Life is a lot more fun this way.

I'm excited for whatever 26 has in store for me. I'm hoping for a lot more adventures, and I can't wait to share them all with you!

Apparently I'm just breaking all my old rules these days. Leggings as pants and now denim on denim, who am I?! Eh, people change right? Right.

This past weekend I went on a little road trip with some of my best girlfriends to Ft. Lauderdale/Miami. You bet your bottom dollar I took them back to one of my favorite places, the Wynwood Walls. They commission new artists every few months or so and I was pumped to see what changed since my last trip.

Beautiful as ever! If possible there were even more colors than I remembered. New sidewalk art (did you see the sassy Honey Bear), new Polaroid art exhibition, I loved it.

I've steered clear of the denim on denim trend for a while because well, I thought I just couldn't pull it off. I didn't want to end up looking like Britney and Justin at the 2001 AMAs. However, I've found the secret: different shades. And you're probably saying DUH PORTER! You know what...chill, I needed to discover this on my own ok!? But seriously, denim on denim is wonderful. You get to play with textures and structure instead of just colors. And comfortable? You bet.

Who knows, maybe my next rebellious outfit will be overalls. Ya'll I'm seriously thinking about it, ask Clancy. Thoughts on Porter trying overalls? Yay or nay???

Birthday/Holiday Gift Round Up (I couldn't resist)

Holiday Gift Round-Up: Madewell, Etsy, Fresh soy cleanser, rose face mask, Kate Spade wallet, Michael Kors, Naked 2 palette, tech, selfie stick, chrome cast

Generally speaking I'm not a fan of "What I Got for Christmas" posts but here I am basically writing my own. I'm not writing this post to brag at all, but a few of the things I received I am REALLY excited about and wanted to share with you! Also, it might be helpful to hear a little review in case you've had your eye on some after holiday sales. See? I'm looking out for you here.

I tend to get stressed making wish lists during the holidays because my birthday is five days before Christmas so I've got two lists to make. Poor me, right? But one thing that I put on my list immediately was this Michael Kors watch.

Holiday Gift Round-Up: Madewell, Etsy, Fresh soy cleanser, rose face mask, Kate Spade wallet, Michael Kors, Naked 2 palette, tech, selfie stick, chrome cast

As you all are aware I'm really in to black and gold so I was searching around for a boyfriend style watch that met my needs. There were so many that just looked huge and obnoxious on my tiny baby wrist. But then I came across this one at Macy's. Praise hands emoji. It was the boyfriend style but slim enough that I would be comfortable wearing it. And I do almost every day!

My parents really stepped up their game this year in the present area. My mom picked out this bracelet from Madewell and she hit it out of the park. Gold? Check. Geometric? Check. Adjustable size? Check. It's my fave. I couldn't find the exact bracelet online but I am really diggin' this one.

Speaking of Madewell, the 'rents also picked up this grey button down for me. I've coveted Madewell for some time but the closest store is in Jacksonville soooooo it's not exactly easy for me to pop over to take a look. But again, when in doubt? Go basic. I love the length of this button down, the softness and structure and did I mention it has pockets??? Like real pockets! Ahhhhh, can't get over it!

(and yes, when I first saw it was an XXS I was like uhhhh ya'll don't know me. However, it's an oversized button down and this truly fits me! So if you're thinking of picking one up you might was to size down.)

You've seen my Coffee and Cuddles tee in Monday's post and you bet it's one of my holiday faves. Clancy...you da real MVP.

I'm also pumped about a few make-up/skin care items as well. Clancy is the queen of eyeshadows so when she's picks you up a new palette for your bday you know you're in good hands. The Naked 2 Basics palette has been on my eyelids ever since I unwrapped it. You guys, it's neutrals come on you know I love it.

Since December is my birthday month I couldn't forget to pick up my Sephora bday gift! If you're not signed up for that yet I highly recommend. This year's gift is the Fresh Soy Face Cleanser and Rose Face Mask. I've only used the cleanser a few times because I'm still working on my cleanser from Boscia but so far I'm a fan. It has a really natural scent and gets off practically all of your makeup. The Rose Face Mask is a real winner. I've already used it 3-4 times and it is amazing! It doesn't dry like some masks but leave it on for 5-10 minutes then rinse off and you feel so refreshed. The scent isn't too powerful either, it's actually very calming.

I also couldn't resist gifting myself with a little something too. Braving the outlet malls during the holidays is near insane but when Kate Spade is having a store-wide 60% off sale, you take the risk.

When my purse was stolen back in August (yeah yeah, so sad) my wallet went with it. I was pissed because that wallet was perfect, it had so many pockets! I've been searching for a replacement ever since but just haven't found the right one. Until now. Kate Spade has your back in the wallet department. I cannot get over how much I LOVE this one. It's black so duh I love, and it's this awesome sort of microfiber material which is so practical for me. And it has ALL the pockets! YAY!

Pretty sure this one was only available in store but this one is a classic!

Holiday Gift Round-Up: Madewell, Etsy, Fresh soy cleanser, rose face mask, Kate Spade wallet, Michael Kors, Naked 2 palette, tech, selfie stick, chrome cast

Now these last two are sort of random tech items but they're what I've gotten the most use out of so far. Ya'll, my dad bought me a selfie stick. I opened it on Christmas and literally laughed out loud! But honestly it's so fun! And my Google Chromecast has made my Netflix viewing wayyyyyyy too easy. Binge watching Making a Murderer anyone? You just plug this baby into your tv, log in, and start watching! Netflix, YouTube, Hulu you name it!

Hope you all enjoyed this little post about my holiday favorites! Let me know what you got this year and what you're excited about!!

Was it just me or was putting on "real" clothes after the holidays wayyyy too difficult? After spending day after day in sweats and fluffy socks, gathering up the strength to actually put an outfit together was too much of a challenge. So instead, I decided to incorporate my loungewear into something socially acceptable.

I've come around to the whole "leggings as pants" trend (with a long enough top please) and I think you can still look put together in leggings. These Lou and Grey leggings are by far my favorite. They have just the right amount of stretch but the material is thick enough where you'll stay nice and warm.

The jacket is also from Lou and Grey and I'm obsessed. Clancy has one in blue and I've always coveted hers because it's so darn soft! I love the light heather green color, I don't have anything in my closet like it. And it's perfect dressed up with a cute blouse and heels or dressed down with jeans and trainers.

Now the real star of this outfit is the graphic tee. You guys. I AM IN LOVE! Obviously coffee and cuddles are two of my favorite things, and this is one of the softest shirts I've ever worn. I love the minimal yet classic design too. And the best part? It was a Christmas gift from my new favorite roommate! Clancy...not Scooter. She got it from the cutest shop on Etsy called Dovetail Vintage that she found on Instagram. Everything from their shop is freakin' adorable! She said it arrived super quick and the packaging was on point.

Maybe in my next outfit post I'll be wearing real pants. But for now I'm cozy and comfy in my upscale loungewear.

Making moves; some tips on adulting

So as I’m sure you’ve read a million times, Porter and I are officially off living on our own…. together. We both lived away for college and then moved back in with our parent’s after graduation. Now, here we are 25&26, in our cute little condo being adults. I mean, let’s be real I’m nowhere close to being an adult but not living with my mom anymore is progress towards that.

Today I’ve got some tips for you when moving out for the first time. Again- I’m no expert but these are just some things I’ve learned in the process.

clean before anything

I cleaned out different areas of my life in the months leading up to our move. I didn’t want to be overwhelmed and have to deal with everything all at once and either throw it out or take it all. I really wanted to make sure that what I was taking with me, were things I really wanted or needed and donated anything that was no longer necessary. (I’m sure my gals at work loved when I brought in a huge container of nail polish for them to go through.) It was so much easier to focus on things because I took the time to spread the cleaning out. Also- moving forces you to throw out a lot of things that are cluttering your life and allows you to have a fresh start.

decide if you're a DIY or buy kind of person

There are some people who want to create the art that goes on their walls, repurpose their furniture, paint and build and all that jazz. And then there are some people who would rather go to IKEA or HomeGoods, find things that they like, and shell out the money for them. I’m probably somewhere in the middle; a little sorority girl, a little I definitely don’t have time for this shit. It’s important to figure out which one of these you are so that the process of decorating and furnishing goes so much smoother. I knew for big pieces like the one above my bed I didn’t mind buying but for smaller ones with a more personal touch, I’ll probably whip out my crafting skills.

pick out a theme

Figure out what your personal aesthetic is. Do you like when places have tons of nautical pieces and are more of an ocean theme? Do you like a modern feel with blacks and whites? Are you eclectic or classic? There is no right or wrong way to decorate, it’s your place and you are allowed to make it your own. I know when I was buying things, I wanted them all to be cohesive so I stuck to black and white with gold accents for my room. As the rest of the apartment…. we haven’t really figured that out yet. But having a vision in mind going into it is way easier than standing in Target with a million things that you don’t even know if you like.

realize you don't have to buy everything at the same time

Moving can be expensive, especially if this is your first apartment and you are pretty much starting from scratch. Obviously there are things you need as soon as you move in but there are also things that you can pick up after the fact. Don’t just buy a painting because your wall looks bare, wait for one you fall in love with. This will help it not feel so expensive but it will also allow you to fill your space with things you really love, not just things you threw in your house because you needed. Porter and I have probably four different kinds of plates and bowls and not a single mug that matches but that's what gives it character.

be realistic... this probably isn't your forever home

Porter: as much as I love you and Scooter, the reality is; we will both probably move out at some point. (In the far far FAR future because moving is a BITCH) If this is your first apartment, you’re probably in the same boat. Keep this in mind when you’re decorating, especially with bigger items. Are you going to want to take that to your next place? Is it a classic piece that will work for years to come and is worth investing in? Also, anytime you split the cost of something, remember someone is going to take it when you move out. Maybe you buy the TV and your roommate gets the table that way there’s no confusion when it’s time to part ways.

have fun

This might sound cheesy but don't get too caught up in the decorating aspect; if this is your first apartment take advantage of those little moments where you guys are making memories together. It was so fun picking out a tree and filling it with lights and ornaments while listening to some Michael Buble, making cookies with a fresh balsam candle burning on the counter. I know that that’s something I’ll remember forever even though our dining room table has nothing on it and is just a little shaky. All of those things will fall into place but for now, I’m okay with sitting on the couch every night watching New Girl eating Brussels sprouts.

Do you have any tips for us and this new thing of adulting?

Why I'm Not Making New Year's Resolutions

Here we are into the first week of 2016 and all anyone is talking about are New Year's Resolutions. A few people are all about resolutions and are really successful throughout the year with keeping them. However, I (along with most people I chat with on December 31st) are not. I have nothing against setting goals, actually I fully support them and am going to give you some helpful tips when making goals in a minute. But I wanted to make it clear that when I set goals for myself at the beginning of the year/month/week they are not "New Year's Resolutions."

In my experience resolutions are not thought out, way too generic and never followed through. I can't tell you how many times I've heard someone say "My New Year's Resolution is to be healthy." Ok, great. What does that mean? Are you going to work out 5 times a week? Are you just going to cut back to 5 cheeseburgers instead of 10 a week? How does anyone accomplish something that vague? So my first tip when setting goals this year is to BE SPECIFIC. My personal resolution for what feels like the past 10 years has been to read more. I've tried so many times and failed but what is "more" anyway? And "more" of what? Books? Blogs? Articles online? So in order to be specific I've set a goal and picked out 4 books (I'm set on reading blogs, articles, Buzzfeed lists etc.) that I want to finish reading this year. I'm really good at starting books, not so good at finishing them.

Books I'm reading, what I'm reading, goals, resolutions, making goals, read more, favorite books.

I've also seen people get pretty crazy when making New Year's Resolutions. They get excited and over-ambitious because they think they have an entire year to complete their goal. And you do but if you wanted to run a marathon in 2015 and didn't get off the couch until October, you have a bit of a problem. So my second tip is MAKE IT ATTAINABLE. Yes, absolutely give yourself a challenge but make sure it's not an out-of-this-world idea because you don't want to be discouraged. Baby steps are better than no steps. If you've never run a day in your life but want to become a runner, maybe make it a goal to run a mile straight by March, two miles by June, three by September and sign up for a 5k before the year is out. That's pretty darn impressive if you couldn't run more than a minute in January.

Finally, MAKE IT MEASUREABLE. If you tell yourself you're going to be positive in 2016, how the heck are you gonna track that? If you want to be “positive” instead maybe set a goal of keeping a gratitude journal that you write in every day. And then at the end of each week/month re-read all of the wonderful things you were thankful for. I speak from experience when I say if I don't track it, it's easier to forget about it or lie about it when people ask how I'm doing.

So those are 3 little tips I have for ya to kick off 2016. Whether you love New Year's Resolutions or just can't stick with them, I think you'll be able to apply these tricks to any goals you'll make. If you have any other suggestions for sticking with goals definitely let us know!

2015 YEARLY FAVORITES!

UM HELLO remember me? I know I KNOW, it’s been quite some time. Like Porter said, your WDA girls have been super busy lately. We moved and now are officially roommates. Add in the fact that Christmas is crazy (duh, I work retail) so I feel like I haven’t had a day off to dedicate to this baby blog! Anyway- we’re back! Are you excited? We are!

Rounding up my 2015 favorites was not an easy task. What makes something a favorite for an entire year?! I thought about things I used on a daily basis, reached for a lot in my wardrobe, watched or listened to a ton. Basically anything I couldn’t imagine 2015 without. Some of this stuff you’ve seen in my monthly favorites, actually... most of it you have because I’ve loved them for quite some time but some might be new to you.

BEAUTY

I used to be that girl that had bright colors and fun accent nails all the time. Now it’s rare to see me with anything other than white or black on. Occasionally I’ll branch out to a nude or gray but nothing more than that. I like the look of neutral nails and have gone through a couple bottles of each in 2015.

When I think about a product I couldn’t live without this year- okay wait maybe that’s slightly dramatic but go with me on this one, it’s definitely my It’s a 10. It keeps my hair super manageable and soft, especially right after showering. 10/10 would recommend.

In 2015 I loved regular water but I also loved Tea Tree Water from LUSH. I used it daily except for when I ran out and that was a tough time that I don’t really want to talk about. Just kidding, but I really did enjoy it this past year. It’s super refreshing, and perfect for when my skin is just feeling a little blah.

I went through a couple okay foundations this year, but it always came back to my Loreal Infallible pro-matte. It looks awesome on the skin, gives the perfect amount of coverage and is drugstore so I got to save some dollhairs.

It took a bit for Better Than Sex to make it’s way into my favorites but I’m pretty picky with mascaras so that’s not surprising. When I first opened it, the formula was a little too wet but I was determined to use it because well $23 for a mascara isn’t cheap. After letting it dry out for a bit, I fell in love. I even repurchased it. It makes my lashes look longer and more voluminous, win win.

The reality is- I have a ton of makeup, like probably more than the average person should. So that made picking a favorite palette difficult. But favorites time is cut throat so I had to narrow it down. My tartelette palette was one that I reached for time and time again. It’s the perfect everyday look and I really can’t ask for anything more. And as much as I loved the original one- I know I’m going to love the in bloom one even more.

MEDIA

I can’t talk about my favorite music without mentioning Adele's 25. I know this album just came out but IT’S SO GOOD. There’s not one song on there I’m not in love with and it’s definitely made it’s way into my favorite albums ever. Also, while I was waiting for her new one to come out, I broke out some old Adele and holy shit, she can do no wrong.

Also JAMES BAEEEE. Or James Bay, whatever you want to call him. I totally fell in love Chaos and the Calm earlier this year and probably listen to it at least once a week. It’s the perfect soundtrack to any mood I’m in and just YES YES YES.

I’ve already watched it three times in 2015 and and thought there was no better way to start off the year than with some New Girl. I found myself putting it on if I needed something to watch in between more serious shows or anytime I just needed a little Nick Miller in my life, and well that’s pretty much all the dang time.

RANDOM

Is it a favorites post without a candle from Bath and Body works? There’s not one scent that sticks out as a yearly favorite but overall, I found one that worked with every season. Maybe one day I’ll graduate to more adult candles, but I don’t really see a reason to do that right now.

So my closet is too full for me to narrow any pieces of my wardrobe down to make it to my yearly favorites but, my Michael Kors watch made the cut. I only bought it half way through the year but have worn it everyday since. It’s simple and classic and I feel naked without it.

LIFE

I went to Austin this year and to say I fell in love is an understatement. I loved the vibe, the food, the people, everything Austin had to offer was amazing. I’m not the kind of girl that could pack up and move on a whim but oh lord if I was, Austin would have a new resident. Besides falling in love with the city, I just have this new desire to see America. I’ve always wanted to travel but have never really had that wanderlust feeling everyone talks about. But after Austin, I’ve got the travel bug.

The best investment I’ve made in quite some time was definitely my Universal annual pass. I went tons last year and I already know I’ll be making a trip later this month. It’s so nice when you can just randomly go on your day off, grab some ice cream in Diagon Alley, ride The Mummy and call it a day. Big hit of 2015, thankfully all of my friends have passes too.

Moving out definitely makes my list of yearly favorites. It was a huge change and I know I’m just in the beginning of this new stage of life (wow, am I making it sound like Porter and I got married, because ….we didn’t) but I’m happy that I accomplished that goal that I set for myself in 2014. Not much else to say about the move other than Scooter is my favorite roommate.

I think one of the biggest things that left an impact on me this year was keeping a gratitude journal. I was inspired to keep one after seeing all of those cheesy “write down good memories and keep them in a jar” things on Pinterest. I’m sorry that’s just not practical for me. I bought a notebook that was set up like a blank planner and every night I just wrote something that made me happy, something that I was grateful for, something that I did for someone, anything that made me feel like a better person or a feeling I wanted to remember. It’s kind of like journaling without having to commit to it, but it more than just a “today I did this” type of thing. It was awesome to look back on the year and relive some of those memories.

PS. Be ready to see TONS of Scooter this year, he's securing his spot in my 2016 favorites.

So that's it, those are my most favorite things from 2015. What were some of yours? I'd love to hear! Cheers to the best 2016 evvvver!
