What We're ...Listening To: Serial

Happy Humpday!! Hope your week is fab so far! Welcome to this week’s What We’re Watching Wednesday. I hope you don’t mind, but I’m changing things up a bit this week because I have a serious new obsession. I’ve never really listened to podcasts before, to be honest I thought they were mostly like tech/gaming things. In the past month or so I have become addicted to two different ones. I love them because they’re so easy to put on while you're still trying to be productive. Let’s be honest though, I get so caught up in them and end up just laying in bed.

ANYWAY, this newest obsession is SERIAL! From the looks of it, I’m not the only one addicted. In case you haven’t heard of it, let me fill you in real quick. It’s about this woman who is looking at a case all the way back from 1999. The case is about a man, Adnan, who is convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae. Each week she digs deeper into the case, focusing on different things about it. You learn about the alibi, other suspects, where the body was found, everything. She shares real testimony, phone conversations, police interviews and even Hae's diary.

Serial is basically a real life SVU/Criminal Minds. When I first heard about it, I knew it was going to be right up my alley. I spent the entire summer of 2011 watching the Casey Anthony trial, I mean like every single day I was glued to the TV. The fact that this is based on a real case makes it so much better. In some ways it makes it creepier though. When Sarah, the narrator, visits the area where the body was found, or goes on the drive they said Adnan made to kill his ex-girlfriend, sometimes I have to take a moment and think to myself “this is real,” This is not something that is based off of a true story, this IS a true story.

One of the things I love most about Serial is how meticulous it is. Sarah starts from the beginning, leaving no minor detail out. You are introduced to everyone that played a role in the investigation. Any inconsistencies are pointed out and looked into. Questions are brought up, and not always answered, or at least not yet. (I’m only on episode 7 and there are 10 out so far) Instead of crunching everything into an hour of TV time where you are just an outsider, I honestly feel like part of the investigation. As a listener, you are finding out things as Sarah is uncovering them. Nobody really knows what the end game is.

Like I said I’m not quite up to date, but I will definitely be caught up by the time the new episode is up on Thursday, but here’s my feelings on everything. If you don’t watch and I have convinced you to start, stop reading NOW. I don’t want my opinions to alter how cool it is to learn things little by little.
I personally think Adnan is innocent. I’m actually at the part right now where he’s telling Sarah that he’s frustrated that she thinks he’s “too nice” to have done it, he would rather have someone say “you’re a jerk, but there are inconsistencies” Which is kind of how I feel. I don’t know this kid, I only know him through listening to a 30-45 minute podcast. However, don’t they always say “beyond a reasonable doubt” I feel like this jury did not catch that whole thing. You should never convict someone if there is even the slightest bit of doubt, and I don’t know how you can hear this and be 100% convinced he is guilty. Do I think that there is some evidence pointing to that? Sure. Adnan was secretive about this relationship, he can’t really account for an albi, not everything works in his favor. However, I am not convinced of Jay’s story either. Point blank, it has changed too much and is also not conclusive that Adnan did it. Also, I'd like to know more about Don, Hae's boyfriend at the time. It kinda seems like, okay he maaaaaybe had an albi but how serious was it? Was it looked into and questioned? But to what extent? Just a hunch...

Overall, I am LOVING everything about this podcast. I seriously recommend it if you are into crime shows at all. Also, even if you’re not it’s still awesome! I’m trying to get everyone to start listening to it because it’s gotten to the point where I just want to talk about it 24/7. So please grab your drink of choice and hit play. ...but only if you have a free day ahead of you because I promise you won't want to take a break.

So tell me, do you listen to Serial?! What do you think about Adnan?

it's been fun,
